To the Gods' Realm

Chapter 13

Iwoke up the next morning and my head felt like it was a drum that someone had banged on all night long. From the fact that no one else was moving, I could only assume that they felt the same way. I closed my eyes for a second. I heard boots walking up between the aisles of bunk beds. There was only one person who could possibly be functional after last night. I cracked my eyes open just in time to see Erica put a large horn to her lips. I managed to slap my hands to my ears before she blew it.

“Everyone up! Everyone awake! Emergency meeting, right here and now,” she said. Unlike most of the times she woke us up, she wasn’t smiling.

Rudy nearly fell out of his bunk. Marie turned invisible with fright for a second. Sarina looked like she had actually become water and was more of a puddle in her bed. Curly was the only one who was getting out of his bed like it was any other day. Our bunk creaked from his density as he got up.

“Oy, what’s the idea?” Rudy said, rubbing his head.

“Our departure has been moved up,” she said.

“It was already moved up. They’re moving it up again?” Rudy asked.

“I know we were all expecting another twenty-four hours to prep. It appears we aren’t going to have that luxury,” Erica stated. Her tone was formal.

That’s not good, Hector said.

“What do you mean?” Ben asked. He was already throwing his uniform on in response to the urgency.

“I don’t have all the information yet, but it’s apparently urgent,” she said. “You have two hours to pack your belongings and meet at the transportation bench.”

With that, she left the room. Of the crew, she was the only one who had her own room. Apparently, it was also the room that moved around the headquarters the most, so it was quite difficult to find. Ben ran after her. The rest of us looked at each other in confusion and started to topple out of bed ourselves.

Rudy sighed and began to shove his rucksack full of his clothes, which were still dirty from the night before. “Jupiter’s bloomers,” he said under his breath.

I went over to him. “What is going on?” I asked.

He shook his head. “This kind of thing is always happening,” he said through gritted teeth. “I hate working with the gods.” He said the last word like it was a curse. “They are always messing with things. They are the ones that keep getting the Foragers killed.” He paused for a second to actually look at me, and sighed. “Honestly, we are probably fine. Mercury, Venus, Pluto—they are all just a bit disconnected from everything. No one even knew about their dimension until a ‘Tyler Ru’ bust into it when he was still mostly human a hundred or two years ago. They have a hard time working with others.”

I nodded—as if it helped me feel any better. The real question going through my head was what it was going to do to my own plans.
